Program

Na:tinixwe Mixine:whe Summer School

Revitalizing Language Through Storytelling and Play

Youth Learning through Language and Land

Our Summer School program immerses school-aged children in Na:tini-xwe Mixine:whe, fostering a deep connection to their identity as Hupa people.

Participants will learn and play (all in Hupa Language) in an environment where our language and culture is at the center.

Program Activities

Xine:wh - Speaking Hupa Language

Children will develop a love for Na:tini-xwe Mixine:whe, and speak it with their fellow students, Summer School staff and their families.

Ninis'a:n - Land-based education

Students spend their time outside on our ancestral land - ninis'a:n. This forges a strong connection to our land and who we are as a people, while regulating students' bodies and emotions in a way that does not happen in a “regular” classroom environment.

Sa'xa:wh - Traditional foods

Students will learn how to prepare Sa’xa:wh (acorn soup) and/or other traditional foods and understand the importance of acorns and other traditional foods to our people.

Ch'ixolchwe - Traditional Stories

Our curriculum is centered around traditional Hupa stories, which are full of life lessons and help children learn more about who we are as Hupa people.
